What is ETIAS and how the heck will that affect my travel?

I’m sure you must have heard all about a “new visa” for Europe next year and are probably concerned that it’ll affect your travel. And while yes, there will be a few extra steps as your plan your vacations across Europe, the ETIAS won’t stop you from getting to your destination.

Lucky for you, we have some answers below on some essential ETIAS questions:

  • It is NOT a visa.  ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, put into place by the EU to enhance security and make entry seamless for travelers. While it works similar to a visa, the process to apply and receive your travel authorization is quite easy.

  • Applying for ETIAS is quite easy to do - you’ll be able to apply online and in most cases, receive your approved Travel Authorization within a few hours (some will take up to 4 days to process)

  • This document allows you to stay up to 90 days within a 180 days period without needing to apply for a long term visa

  • There is a fee of 7 euros (roughly $8) to apply

  • The EU has pushed back the launch date of this new system to mid 2025, just in time for the summer travel season.

  • It is valid for 3 years (or if your passport expires)

  • ETIAS will be linked to your passport when you travel.

Once the program is launched, we recommend applying for ETIAS 1-2 weeks before your travel dates to ensure all documents have been approved.
